Any good photo takes “being there” but in some cases “being there” is more challenging than at other times. I am a part of Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, Station 27 in Nanaimo and were tasked by the Canadian Coast Guard to monitor the race and be ready in case of emergency. Most of the time that consists of a lot of waiting even long hours into the night but sailing is often really beautiful and presents a dynamic and colourful image so I was lucky enough to be in the right place to take some of these photos. My coxswain is also a photographer and he piloted the boat to a position where I could get these three boats in the same frame. The curving line of the boats is echoed in the curve of the sail helping to produce a dynamic image. I was using a 2x extender on my 70-200 but in some of the photos and it became clear that I was sacrificing sharpness for that extra reach. The other thing that I was unhappy with was the hazy yellow character of the skies but overall I was pleased with the images.
